Retirement/Sheltered Housing

Sheltered Housing

Retirement/Sheltered housing offers independent living to residents, backed up by the availability of professional support. Residents live in a safe and secure environment, supported by a friendly high quality service which emphasises the resident’s right to make their own choices and decisions within their own home.

Sheltered/Retirement Housing

Sheltered/retirement housing schemes allow residents to live independently with the option of professional support at hand when required.

They are designed to accommodate elderly persons, however other people may be considered pending their requirements, for example in disabled people's accommodation.

A number of providers operate sheltered/retirement schemes in Torfaen including Bron Afon Community Housing, Melin Homes, Linc Cymru and Aelwyd Housing Association.

For more information contact the providers directly.

Bron Afon retirement housing applications go online

From April 2014 all applications will have to be made online through the Torfaen Homeseeker website.

Extra Care Schemes

Extra care is similar to sheltered housing, with residents having their own front door and tenancy, but there are more facilities and greater care and support. Ty George Lansbury in Cwmbran is Torfaen’s first extra care facility.

It offers 35 self-contained apartments with on-site communal facilities and optional care packages. Care and support is available 24 hours a day and can be adapted to meet the changing needs of residents.

Communal facilities include lounge areas, a hair salon, laundry room, library, an indoor bowls arena, patio area and bistro. There is also a guest bedroom which residents can book for family visits.

Shared Lives Supported Housing

Shared Lives is another form of supported housing through the Shared Lives Scheme which is currently provided by ategi. Shared Lives Schemes offer long term accommodation to vulnerable adults from all service users groups who prefer to be supported within the ordinary family hmoes of Shared Lives Carers.

Shared Lives Carers are checked, assessed, trained and approved by the ategi Shared Lives Scheme before they are carefully matched with individuals referred to the service.

The scheme staff draw up agreements and facilitate reviews to ensure that assessed needs are met and that service users enjoy a consistent level of support they can only get through Shared Lives Carers.
